How to get rid of static hair?

Everyone has experienced this: static hair, frizziness and flyaways! The problem occurs more often during the cold winter months when indoor air is very dry due to heating. The higher humidity, the less static the hair. Static hair is literally your hair building up an electric charge thanks to dry air or friction. Hair strands repel each other, leaving you with the so-called static, difficult to style hair. Wearing synthetic clothes, which generates more static electricity than natural fabrics such as wool, cotton, silk, adds to the problem.

Those stylish, cosy hats we wear in winter to keep ourselves warm? Those are making static electricity even worse, creating friction and building static electricity as we wear them.

When you're brushing your hair you can even worsen the problem as brushing creates friction and thus more electricity, especially if you brush with the wrong kind of brush. 

Luckily, there are hair-care products that can help restore the hair’s normal electrical charge and easier to manage. • rub a drop of fine, natural dry oil between your hands and go through your hair before you brush. Less is more especially if you have fine hair like me. Use more if you have thick hair. But build up gradually so your hair does not get too greasy. 
• make sure you nourish your hair with conditioner and/or a hair mask
• only wear cotton of silk clothes when heatstyling, brushing your hair
• if you use a hairdryer use one with ionizing effect or a high-end dryer from for example Dyson
• ensure that the air in your home or office is not too dry. If necessary regularly open a window to let in some more humid air or use a humidifier.
• avoid friction with - particularly - synthetic - clothing such as sweaters, scarves, hats and avoid using plastic combs and brushes! The latter make the problem even worse and a bad hairbrush isn't a good choice anyway.
• pat your hair gently with wet/damp hands
• take a metal coat hanger and rub it all over hair (not raking through), metal is a conductive material and can thus discharge part of the electricity
• Finally: using a natural, boar bristle, high quality hairbrush using only natural wood and a cushion out of natural rubber is extremely important as it spreads natural sebum all over hair strands and reduces breakage which also contributes to the problem.  Check out the range of handmade hairbrushes at Delphin & Emerence But even when brushing with a good brush your hair can stand up, do not panic. Give it some minutes and your hair will relax on its own as well.
